Eco-friendly furniture
In an effort to reduce our environmental impact, Thuja Wood Art uses all salvaged, reclaimed, or recycled wood. No new trees have been cut down to make these artifacts.

We us only environmentally safe stains when clients want to clear coat their artifacts to keep the beautiful orange/red tones of the cedar when it is first split. These are water based stains which carry the oils deep into the wood, providing UV protection without a surface coating. We can recommend a locally made cedar stain, which carries the Canada environmentally safe stamp.

Most clients leave the cedar untouched, and it turns a wonderful silver colour in the first few years. Cedars natural oils help it last outdoors longer than any other woods. We always make sure to keep the wood off the ground, this ensures a long life with our projects. Posts are always set on metal saddles several inches off the ground.

Hinges & latches
Thuja Wood Art designs custom metalwork for hinges and latches made from mostly recycled steel by Cresent Moon Forge in Victoria, B.C. Owner Glenn handcrafts each piece to mold with the curves in the wood. You will not find any better quality latches. (I know because I have tried, and the best solution was to design my own…) Contact us for more information on purchasing hinges or latches, pricing, and shipping.

Bamboo
Colin has begun growing bamboo on his property for use in projects. Bamboo is a very fast growing and sustainable plant to work with. It is very strong and works very well when used in conjunction with cedar. We hope to expand into more timber bamboo’s in the near future.

Biofuels
At Thuja Wood Art we are proud to say that we run our vehicles on biodiesel and straight vegetable oil. The work truck (1989 Dodge Cummins Turbo Diesel) has been running on biodiesel for more than two years now. We collect recycled waste oil from local restaurants to run our Westfalia, and will soon be making our own biodiesel on site.
